Not gonna’ lie, this one is a bit of a tough one. It’s way easier to point out what we dislike about others, at least in my neck of the woods it is, than it is to identify what we like about each other. More often than not, we all have a lot more in common than we originally think. It just takes a little bit of patience to see it.
This past year was a great year for many reasons, but just like any other year, there were hardships as well. I went from freedom and flexibility of two part time jobs to one, stable full time job. It was necessary to reach my financial goals, but it definitely put a damper on my sense of freedom that I actually have. The silver lining of that, however, is that I’ve gotten to get to know my co-workers, and building connections with others is what life is all about.
One of them, just turned twenty two, and he already has been with the company for roughly three or four years. He has more integrity, kindness, wit, and intelligence than most anyone else I know. He is stubborn, like myself, and our sarcastic comments typically bounce off one another’s. I admire his dedication, despite how he truly feels about his life currently. I remember when I was his age, and I felt lost with no direction, yet determined to figure it out. I hope he figures out what his desire and his purpose are.
Another one, is in his forties, and he’s basically a giant kid. He comes in singing randomly, and will sit and make jokes. I admire his ability to just laugh it off, and not take life so serious all the time. He knows what he wants and he goes for it, figuring out how to navigate the obstacles along the way.
The next one actually just left the company, but in the short amount of time that we worked together, I’ve come to view him as like a mentor. He’s one of those people where others would come to the office just to sit and talk with him about whatever problems they might have; a true leader. He inspired others to keep doing their best even if it felt futile, myself included.
Even though I struggle with my sense of freedom, I’m glad I get to know these people.
