Why Your Best Employees Are Checking Out

Reasons for quiet quitting - why your best employees are checking out

Nobody storms out anymore. They won’t burst into your office, slam their resignation on your desk, then flip you off on their way out. No, they’ll just stop raising their hand in meetings, stop offering ideas, and stop going above and beyond. They do exactly what’s asked of them – nothing more, and nothing less. By the time anyone notices, they’re already checked out, way before they hand in their notice.

Globally, disengagement costs businesses an estimated $8.9 trillion every year, which works out to roughly 9 percent of world GDP. Only about 21 percent of employees worldwide report being genuinely engaged at work. In the U.S., more than half of workers now fall into what’s commonly called “quiet quitting,” doing the minimum required and nothing beyond it.

On the other side of the coin, companies with highly engaged workforces see 59 percent lower voluntary turnover than companies without one. That’s not a small gap. That’s the difference between a team that stays and grows, and one that quietly bleeds out, one resignation letter at a time.

Disengagement doesn’t usually start with the employee. It’s a deep seeded feeling of being unheard, misunderstood, feeling like effort doesn’t matter, or watching the same problems go unaddressed, meeting after meeting.

Leadership isn’t just about setting direction, it’s influence. It’s about whether people feel like their work means something and their voice counts for something. When that erodes, the checking out starts quietly, long before it becomes visible on paper.

None of this requires a total culture overhaul. It usually starts smaller than that. Actually listening in one-on-ones instead of just running through a checklist. Following up on feedback instead of collecting it and letting it disappear. Giving people a reason to care about outcomes, not just tasks.

AKA: genuinely caring about your people.

If you’ve noticed people going quiet who used to speak up, that’s usually the first sign worth paying attention to. It’s also exactly what I dig into with leadership development work, and what I’ll be talking through in more depth at Building Your Training Blueprint on August 26th.
