Your Business Doesn’t Have a People Problem.

Every business owner has a theory about what’s causing their headaches, assuming their business has a people problem. Turnover is up because people “don’t want to work anymore”. Sales are down because the team isn’t hungry enough. Productivity is slipping because people aren’t pulling their weight.

Sometimes that’s the truth. However, more often than not, it’s a guess dressed up as a diagnosis, and it’s usually aimed at a person, rather than the system that’s causing it.

More than 40 percent of businesses fail to meet their objectives due to missing, incomplete, or inaccurate data. Among companies that launch cost-reduction initiatives using analytics, only 49 percent ever see real value from the effort, largely because they never had a clear enough picture of the actual problem to fix it correctly the first time.

On top of that, businesses lose an average of nearly $13 million a year to poor data quality alone. And despite years of “data-driven” becoming a business buzzword, only about 31 percent of companies actually consider themselves data-driven today, a number that’s decreased from 37.1 percent since 2017.

Data is slower and less satisfying than a gut call. It’s much faster to decide “this employee isn’t a good fit” than to pull turnover data by department, shift, and manager, and find out the real pattern. Blaming a person feels like doing something. Digging into actual data (like reviewing exit interviews) feels like doing nothing, even though it’s usually the only way to find out what’s actually going on.

A proper business diagnostic doesn’t make decisions based on theories. It starts with the data: turnover by team, not just company-wide. Time-to-productivity for new hires. Where handoffs break down. Which numbers moved before the problem became visible, not after.

More often than not, what looks like a people problem turns out to be a scheduling problem, a communication gap, or a process nobody ever really visualized out loud. The people are rarely the issue, and nobody looks closely enough to see what the problem actually is.

If you’ve been circling the same problem for months without getting anywhere, that’s usually a sign the diagnosis was wrong, not the effort.
