I definitely used to be a night owl – I think most everybody was at some point in their lives; usually during the teen years. (It’s not just a phase, mom!)
I used to be a server/bartender, so living that lifestyle helped me stay a night owl. Sleep in until about noon, get up, shower, get dressed, eat, then get ready to go in at 4. Work until 1-2am, then go hang out with friends.
I did that before my daughter, and went back to it for less than a year after maternity leave. It had its perks – really good pay (not to toot my own horn but I was damn good), didn’t have to pay for daycare because I was home during the day and my husband was home at night, and my schedule was more or less flexible.
It didn’t take me very long to realize I couldn’t do that anymore since our opposite work schedules made it hard for my husband and I to enjoy each others company. I went from late night bartending shifts to early morning coffee brewing sessions. And when I say early morning, I mean clocked in and ready to work by 5 am. That was a shock to the system for sure.
It took awhile, but I slowly became a morning person. Now, I look forward to getting up early and enjoying a cup of coffee before the hustle and bustle of the day. It’s peaceful and helps me mentally prepare for my day.
