A slap to the face…or several.
I had never been in a position like this ever in my life, meaning I had absolutely zero training or inkling for what was to come. My predecessor, who had only been in the position for less than a year, left a month before I was promoted. The person before them was the owner’s son, who had since been promoted to VP of the company.
This particular role was constantly surrounded by negative connotations, as it always had been. Even the title, “Compliance Auditor” struck fear and anxiety into those who were unfortunate enough to be in the same room. The person who held that position before me changed it to something a tad different, which was not necessarily better but also not worse: Compliance Officer (they were a retired police officer…fitting, right?). OF course everyone despised it; they felt like their mistakes and shortcomings were punishable by law!
